Tide threw a free concert in New Orleans commemorating the fifth anniversary of both Hurricane Katrina and the Tide Loads of Hope program. Faith Hill performed.

In terms of conceptual design, we did do some initial brainstorming and conceptualizing, but Tide already had a marketing campaign for Loads of Hope using a grid of images from their travels around the country, so we ultimately decided to go with something similar, adding more “grout” between the tiles and using more negative space in general.

There were three general visual designs happening throughout the space; 1) the face mosaic on white with pattern variations, 2) banners of solid orange with an occasional Tide Loads of Hope logo, and 3) a white field bordered by orange or blue with blue text.

The event had a very strong brand presence. In addition to the signage, laminates and mezzanine banners, I also made long hanging banners for the alcoves and stage in the performance hall, inset wall panels for the VIP room, a step-and-repeat, various foamcore elements, window decals, stickers and directions cards.

I don’t know exactly what’s happening in this photo, but it’s interesting and worth sharing. I might like to think he’s eating it because it’s such a tasty design, or I might not like to think that. This is a step and repeat I designed for Perez Hilton’s One Night in Chicago.

This is another of the “One Night in” events that I’ve been designing for BMF Media Group and their friend, the Queen of All Media.  You can take a look at my One Night in Toronto post or One Night in London post for any more info about the design scheme in general.

For “Chicago” in the logo, I took a famous sign in Chicago and sort of flipped it around. It was bertical, then vectorized it with a sort of hand-drawn look. In the background, the image of sunset over Chicago is a great image by Kevin Dooley. I vectorized an image of the Chicago skyline looking south from North Ave Beach by Monika Thorpe. The Perez logo and the Perez Presents head were supplied from the client. Jenn from BMF suggested we add a Chigaco Perez’s ballcap, which was a great detail.

I particularly love the step-and-repeat on this one. The skyline and sunset effect look great as a backdrop for the logos. It appears someone else may also think so.

I also made evites, a web rsvp, bar decals, bar menus, door tags, vertical sponsor banners, a stage banner, sponsor banners and a sign for the help desk.

One day when looking at traffic cameras online, I realized that there must be innumerable live image feeds on the internet and the voyeur in me decided to take a sort of survey of what I could find. I eventually found a set of National Parks webcams that gave me a surprising feeling of peace, as if I were actually there. This video shows a series of image sequences obtained through a simple PHP script written to download images from three of those U.S. National Park web-cameras every 30 minutes. The script ran for a few weeks in late June and early July 2010 and captured a sequence of images from Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Theodore Roosevelt National Park and Point Reyes National Seashore. Nights were removed from the sequences along with any damaged images from camera errors (the Point Reyes camera was offline for several days).

I also separated out the audio tracks from the music and used certain tracks to populate actions in the video. The dot and ring in the upper left corner, the lines in the bottom right and the yellow/blue color filters over the whole video all reflect the audio tracks. Frame blending was used to smooth over the jerkiness.

The music is “Venus Moonrise” from Agua Trip’s album “Genetics”. The earth image is from the famous images taken from the Galileo space probe as it sped away from Earth on its way out into the unknown.

This was a pretty standard project. The client delivered some logo collateral and the album cover and asked me to create certain elements for the event. They also asked me to make a few original pieces including a replica of a Jersey Shore welcome sign and a header for a tattoo station sign. They wanted the tattoo sign to have an “Ed Hardy” feel to it. After searching the web for creative commons tattoo elements (a few of them coming from the vector artist Ben Johnson), I felt I had a decent collage. The “Jersey Shore” font is called Freebooter Script and the “Tattoos” font is called Tattoo Ink.

I also worked on banners, decals, and other signs.

This is another of the “One Night” events that I’ve been involved with. Feel free to look at my One Night in Toronto post for any general notes about the two designs.

For this event, I went London-moody and decided to desaturate the elements and go with a grayer color palette. I also added a glow effect to several of the elements. In order to reference London’s literary history, I applied a sort of etching or lithograph effect to the head image and title logo and chose a cool free font called Mido for the type.

The Union Jack image in the background is from a vector of a UK Naval flag and the skyline is composed of vectors of London landmarks. Unfortunately, I no longer can tell you where I found the constable’s helmet.

I based this design heavily on Clearasil’s Science of Looking Awesome campaign imagery, replicating its grayish blue/white gradient, the little “science lines” and the white concave footer.

I have often found amusement in the use of pseudo-scientific elements in pharmaceutical/cosmetic advertising and now I got to play my part. In that spirit, I was asked to design a mock periodic table showcasing the different “elements” that one could use to look awesome. Initially, I tried to group the “elements” into common themes, trying to replicate the order of the actual periodic table, but the client decided they wanted it to appear random, so I jumbled them up. Overall, I enjoyed making that piece.

One of the event’s themes was relaxation/meditation and they wanted to make sure guests could remain undisturbed while getting some beauty sleep, so I was asked to design special “do not disturb” door tags. Visitors also were able to choose a free Sounds of Beauty Sleep CD and I threw together a little card for people to choose which compilation they desired.

I also made signs for CDs, media check-in and the relaxation zone, plus I resized campaign images and threw the Clearasil logo into decals of varying sizes.

The “One Night” event series has been going on for a while now and I inherited an aesthetic concept, namely the skyline with the Perez Presents head peeking over it.

For my part, I chose to create a rich night sky using a blue gradient and two Creative Commons photos from Flickr, one of the aurora borealis and the other of a starfield. I also wanted to change the hair color back to pink (the file I received had green hair). For the “One Night in Toronto” typography, I chose Benton Condensed for a clean, modern look. I found a simply illustrated silhouette of the Toronto skyline at http://www.sxc.hu/photo/1115557 and a great vector of a flapping  Canadian flag at http://www.vectortemplates.com/vector-countries-canada.php. I just turned the Canadian red into a nice PH pink.

BMF approached me to create elements for Malibu’s First Day of Summer event they were throwing on the Solstice. They sent me the main elements (the “radiomaliboomboom” and “First Day of Summer” logos and the radio tower) and I was to place elements, to design body typography and to come up with a color scheme as well as perform basic image formatting tasks.

I designed the look of the web rsvp form, including the evite on the left side and a form on the right. I also created evites, two wall vinyls, a stage banner, an artist credential and an image for a DVD still and a bar menu.

This site is a searchable database of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournaments. It has numerous fun useful tools including numerous search methods (by promoter, by date and by a radial location search), a manageable calendar for registered users with the option to import the calendar into other ical readers like Google Maps or Apple iCalendar, and a map showing various data (events in a user’s calendar, search results, whole event database).

This site is probably beating the Battery Plant Database as the most useful site I have created so far, and we have several updates to the site’s functionality in the works.

This was a full-fledged design project for me. Apart from help from a couple open-sourced codebases (see below), I designed everything myself from the graphic design through the data architecture to the site’s code.

The visual design went through numerous drafts. The color scheme was based on the floor mats (tatami) used in many American Jiu-jitsu tournaments. Good old red[, white] and blue. The logo is again based on the tatami, namely the way several tatami are placed together to create the larger grappling area. The text section of logo uses Arial Black as the font. I created the banner ad from an image of the site owner in a  tournament, did some effecting and (as a sort of joke) threw in the exciting splattery stuff in the background. I think it came out pretty well.

The site uses a few open source chunks of code for some of its heavy lifting, such as PHPICalendar for the site’s calendar interface and the Google Maps API. I custom-coded the rest (MYSQL, PHP, XHTML, CSS, ICS, XML), creating both a backend CMS and the front-end user  interface, and it was quite a load to get through. I love projects that really make me learn, and this one really pushed me to expand my skill-set even further.

I am glad we finally got something up. Now it’s time for the analysis.

Will has been strengthening his storytelling skills in the form of a sprite comic called Simple Pixel, writing and designing over 100 episodes so far. He uses a pencil and paper and Paint.Net for all the effects. I asked Will for a couple of sentences about the project, eliciting this response:

I like to think that Simple Pixel is a “wanna-be movie”. I put most of the work into the scripting and storyline, and the graphic design is sort of my way of making a “film” out of it. The idea that a tale can be expressed through visuals, be it comic or cinema, is very fascinating to me. And as long as I lack a video camera, comics have been a great way for me to show the stories I come up with.

While I have to admit that I have a hard time connecting with much of the story (it has Pokemon in it for example and i know nothing about those), I do enjoy his clever application of  various techniques (blur, focus, lighting and shadow, position, etc) to help him illustrate his story. I have included a selection of some of my favorite panels below.

The world needs growing designers, writers and storyboardists and I believe that if he chooses to keep improving his skills, he has potential to become a successful professional in the graphic arts.

I will be on the lookout for other young designers having fun and stretching their wings and I will post them here when I find them.

After reacquiring my born name as a domain name, I wasn’t sure what to do with it, seeing that my online output is scattered among a few other sites.

So, I decided to make a simple lifestream using Sweetcron, collecting any creative output I put on the world wide web, categorized by media (like music, writing, design, etc), and showing it all in a constantly updating stream of links on lindseyboise.com. This sort of thing is all very familiar to some of you. The rest of you may find it nifty, neat and efficient.

The design is very simple; white on black, serif typeface, colors at 80% saturation, and a face.

Luckily, the water is receding now, but we are starting to see exactly what sort of mess we need to clean up and it is sort of daunting. Plus, there is heavy water conservation efforts since we are running out of clean water, so forget showers or washing dishes.

I know many of my readers are folks in the entertainment industry; venue owners, performers, marketers, PR gurus, etc. and I would call on you to use whatever outlets (Twitter, your blog, a moment on the microphone, etc) to mention this issue and help raise the national awareness so people can get some help down here. This is an entertainment town and many of you probably have collaborators and contacts here who are digging out their equipment and offices from feet of contaminated mud and anything you can do to help raise awareness will come back to you in karma points, I am sure of it.

Notasgoodasthebook.com is a pet project of mine. The site was live for a while early in 2009, but I felt that I needed a drastic redesign, so I stopped posting content and spent months tweaking it whenever I could find a moment away from my other work.

In addition to designing and coding the WordPress theme, I also came up with a fun set of flash banners depicting the pleasure of reading a book and the ugly disappointment one finds when reading/seeing/hearing its less-than-worthy adaptations. The logo is a simple type treatment over a bookmark.  The inspiration for the colors/shading/textures of the visual design was a mingling of the favorite hardcover books of my past.

I am the editor and the main contributing author to the site, but hope to see many more public submissions and posts from a group of regular contributing authors as the site grows.

I used numerous great free open-sourced plugins for WordPress to accomplish much of the functionality. The category icons are modified versions of inages from several open-sourced icon sets.

I knew that I had to utilize the palms, windmills and mountains since they are such a visual cue to Palm Springs and Coachella, but I wanted to make them less the focal point and more a simple detail. I wanted to use the desert landscape to imply vast distance while using the pillar emanating from the Music Lounge to be even larger, but in a soft way. I also wanted to keep the mountains in between the viewer and the pillar to increase intrigue, though it may not be geographically correct.

I initially imagined this event to be a night event, so my first concepts were created to deliver a mood of the calm delivered at night or dawn in the desert. I included them here just to show you where I was coming from. The event was a daytime event, so I made the sky more of a dusty gradient and brought the mountains out of the shadow. This tempered some of the intensity of the earlier concepts, making it more subtle and  representative of the event itself.

We carried the design through all of the elements; the menus, the staff laminate, the step and repeat, and numerous pieces of event signage. The one piece that I didn’t design was the Diesel cocktail menu. Diesel supplied fonts and images from their recent “Be Stupid” campaign and I just rearranged things a slight bit to make the menu. I did numerous text-color concepts and though I am not sure which one they went with, I included my favorite one here.

I enjoyed designing this project and wished I could have been in the vicinity of Coachella to check it out. I heard there were some good performances.

I was asked to design a step and repeat, a bar decal and a cocktail menu, all with a circus/carnival/freak show feel. Obviously the Perez pink was important in the color scheme.

BMF wanted a giant photography wall, designed like the side of a large circus tent. They wanted it to feel large and powerful; 10 feet tall by 30 wide with three different stations for stepping, posing and repeating. I like to experiment with step and repeats, paying attention to 3d space and the effect the wall can have on the room and the people in front of the camera. So, it made me happy when Bruce suggested the tent idea. Looking at it now, I would have made the stripes orange and pink like the decal and menu, instead of white and pink.

This was an experiment in expectations.

Winter Music Conference is in Miami. I wanted to try something different than other event collateral from Miami-based events, which often portray palm trees and variations of a wide-open, clear sky. In this design I still used the palm trees, but from an angle less often employed. I also used a fair amount of muted, dithered shading to imply a softly lit, overcast day. Warm overcast days on a tropical beach are my personal favorites. I also added “Oasis” to the brand name to design the event logo. I tried to avoid the treatment one might expect from the meaning of the word Oasis. The pool shape is my take on the inner section of the Raleigh pool, a beautifully-shaped bucket of water.

I worked on an evite, a web rsvp, two-sided food and drink menus, signs for the stage and credentials. As always with BMF, I was only responsible for the graphic design of the web RSVP, not the web design.

For this event, I was supplied the event logo on which I added the sponsorship line. I kept the two colors from the logo and used them as the complete color-scheme. The background texture is an effected photograph of the exterior of the W Hotel in South Beach, the location of the event. The font is great and called League Gothic.

I worked on evites, a web rsvp, credentials, a drink menu, and a T-shirt.

I love the silvery cool feeling; hopefully appealing for la gente in Miami caliente.

I was glad to get commissioned to do the 2010 Carrera Escape, seeing that I worked with BMF on last year’s Carrera Summer Escape and really enjoyed it. Carrera has a bold sense of style, saturated with attitude.

What excited me most of all was that for this year’s event series I would be responsible for the overriding design concept of all the events, whereas last year I worked inside of a defined style handed down to me for execution. Of course I needed to design something that supported Carrera’s campaign imagery for this season and to bring it to life in an event environment. One thing I immediately noticed was the way that the bright sun and “Shine On” were burned into the images. It was so distinctly summer to me, hot and direct. The destructive effect of the burning creates a secrecy as the eye loses definition of edges and it pulls the eye into the shade, giving a sense of intimacy with the other elements in the shade.

I decided that I would keep the deep oranges and reds of their campaign imagery and use lens flare effects to burn out and hide certain of the design elements. I wanted something to tie into last year’s event and continue a thread, so I kept the cityscape as a background element. The typography is based on their campaign, but expanded a bit.

In addition to designing general elements to be used for all the events in the series (logo, step and repeats, wraps for the DJ booths, banners for railings, etc), I also produced iterations of design elements specific to the event thrown at South by Southwest 2010. As usual with BMF projects, I did not create the actual RSVP website, I stayed with the graphical side. The step and repeat stands out to me, especially in the Wireimage photography from the event, and that’s where it’s supposed to stand out.

Though Jackson has used burlap and sometimes tarp as materials in previous work, and has been known to be quite adept at clothing design, this is the first example of using them together. He is usually working in even more organic materials like grasses and trees and continues the tradition with another recent project called It Will Continue To Grow, No Matter What I Do, which antagonizes Giuseppe Penone‘s piece Continuerà a crescere tranne che in quel punto. I love the statement.

I suggest checking out some of Jackson’s work, the photography alone is beautifully done.

I can clumsily sum them up for you. We see what appears to be a platonic, fun loving relationship in which Annabelle gets dressed in fun outfits and Donald waits around for her. Of course they enjoy each other and share tender moments to cute music. That seems like a potential romance brewing, right? Donald is sure putting in a lot of boudoir time. He is a good friend. Annabelle must see that. Maybe there is hope for our patient knight.

But, in the latest installment we hear about this new “boyfriend guy” lurking around, with a scary name… Angel. Understandably Donald’s jealousy flares up wildly and everything goes downhill from there. Oh, what a cruel world. Will they ever work this out?

I wonder who got to go with Annabelle to Charlotte Ronson’s Fall 2010 Fashion Show? The world may never know.

This is actually Soleil Moon Frye and Melissa Joan Hart. Punky Brewster and Clarissa are fictional characters they played on TV. There is a difference you know. Of course you do.

For International Friendship Month (that’s February), BMF Media Group was hired to create an event for Gain and their Better Together campaign. They asked me to design concept renderings before the event and several elements for the party itself.

The event was thrown in Los Angeles at Sweetharts, the shop of Melissa Joan Hart and her mother. The event was also celebrating the friendship of Melissa and Soleil Moon Frye.

The client’s initial brief contained descriptors like Alice in Wonderland, sweet, girly and floral. When examining Gain’s style guide, I noticed how Gain’s colors, fonts and creative elements were perfect puzzle pieces for that tone. If put together in an interesting way, they could incite the imagination. My favorite element was the evite, which makes me feel like there is a Gain-stained Wonderland right behind the invitation waiting for you to discover it. I also experimented with textures like lace, linen and paper.

I also worked on stickers, images, vinyl decals, a banner, and a flower tip sheet for their lecture on floral arranging. I also designed a cocktail menu.

Another highlight to me is the step and repeat. The shapes of the logos and how they react with each other and the negative space feels light. It has a sort of whimsy. Nobody ever notices step and repeats. I love making them anyway.

I started this project a while ago, in the stage where BMF presented event concepts, also known as “renderings”, to their client. We did a series of seven renderings, basically makeovers to the athletic courts and exterior suites of the W hotel in Miami, draping thing with the Tide plus Febreze Sport logo and colors. Renderings are always exciting for me. There is more room to explore. It doesn’t have to look real. Actually, it is easier to sell the concept if the image is a little unreal and fantastic. Many times the events end up looking nothing like the renderings, but in this case they looked surprisingly similar to the end result.

Well, time went by and we got down to the actual business of designing the elements. Using the Tide style guide, we worked on event elements like invites, charity signage, credentials, a couple drink menus and locker room signs with messages from Tide and Febreze.

BMF had been working on tennis and football targets with another designer, but they weren’t happy with the results and they passed them over to me. The logo itself was basically already a target, so the challenge was to come up with ways to show how to score without drawing lines everywhere or obscure the logo with numbers. I decided to use color coding and sizing, leaving it up to the player to figure it out as a small mind game as well.

Needless to say, the event was a grand success. BMF and their client were happy and that makes me happy. If you find yourself curious, you can see images from the event at WireImage.

BMF commissioned me to design a window treatment for the ticketing kiosk of the Egyptian Theatre at Sundance. The kiosk was to be transformed into a complimentary coffee kiosk sponsored by Cafe Bustelo.

It was a pleasure to design for the 5 windows, and I used two sunbursts emanating from the far left and right windows and merging at the center window.

Originally, I designed a wisp of steam traveling across all windows and tying them together visually, but I eventually decided to remove it. I think the sunburst ties the windows together enough.

Client: The Battery Conservancy

My Role(s): Creative Director, Designer, Developer

The Battery Conservancy is responsible for many things, one of which is the design, planting and upkeep of one of the best urban gardens in the nation. It is truly inspiring to walk the gardens at the tip of Manhattan, looking from the harbor and the Statue of Liberty down to the blooming flowers and grasses.

While doing various projects for the conservancy, it became very apparent that there needed to be a centralized location for all the plants and specific information about them. To make a long story short, I created a custom database with a back-end CMS and, after the horticultural staff entered in all the plant data and images, a front-end for users to access all the information.

The project is only in Stage 1, so to speak, and there are plans for extended and improved features and usability, but for the most part, I am very happy with the way this turned out. The database opens up useful information to a large population of urban horticulturalists and gardeners in general.

Users can search through the plants in the gardens of the Battery by either a single quality (name, bloom months, zones, light requirements, families, etc) or by combinations of qualities. They can also simply browse through all the plants. Users can also view visualizations (aka charts) based on the plant data.

This project wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Steve Lagerstrom, Sigrid Gray and Alyssa Siegel of the Battery Conservancy.

My Role(s): Designer

Free’py was referred to me by Esther L Kim, who designed the Free’py logo. Free’py provides a valuable service, free photocopies, to college students, while also bringing advertisers in direct contact with a valuable audience, college students. In addition, Free’py is environmentally responsible and on the cutting-edge of “green” photocopying technologies.

This was a simple graphic design job. I supplied the visual look and feel, imagery and layout, and a small amount of web-coding advice. Free’py executed the design.

I hope Free’py the best in their future growth as a company. They were a pleasure to work with.

I am also excited to get to work on projects localized to the Nashville and the Southeast. There is a lot of work to be done, and I can’t wait to get started. I will keep you informed of any Lindsey Boise Design news throughout the process.

The technology behind the site is just a normal WordPress installation, with a few plugins (CForms, All in One SEO, WP-Spamfree and a modified version of Custom Fields for Feeds).  I have done a fair share of customization of the theme, both in function and in visual design.

This was a motion graphic video made by Chris Johnson and myself to be performed as video scenery projected behind a solo dancer in Resonant Imaging by Barkin/Selissen Project, a NYC-based dance group.

Chis and I both came up with scenes, building upon images  and video both harvested from the internet and self-taken, with the goal of representing a sort of dreamlike free association. We also wanted to experiment with the effect the video would have on the audience in the room, paying attention to spacial movement in the video.

Chris and I also collaborated on the sound design and Ginger Burden joined us to record all the music except for the intro song, which is by Tones from the Underground.

Client: The Battery Conservancy

One of the internet projects funded by The Battery Conservancy is Castlegarden.org. It is a leading site for genealogical research, drawing from the large resource of immigration records from Castle Garden, in Battery Park. Client: The Battery Conservancy

The Battery Conservancy recently held a special unveiling of the New Amsterdam Plein and Pavilion for New York City officials, the Crown Price of the Netherlands and other VIPs. It was quite a shindig.

I designed the invitations, the programs, program inserts, etc. I had the pleasure of taking a scan of the original Schaghen Document (called the birth certificate of New Amsterdam) and making a 6-foot high poster where one can read the interlinear translation.

The Battery Conservancy also awarded certain people with “Orders of the Battery”, which were pins in the shape of the pavilion. I designed a small backing plate, where the pins could be attached to the center, and where they would perfectly fit into the void in the top of the image of the model.

In addition, we took the architectural sketches of the pavilion by Ben Van Berkel and organized them in a pinwheel pattern on the tablecloths of the event.

NoviJovi is an infant apparel company, making fun silk-screened tees. The owner, Jeffrey Novick was referred to me by Madison Harding, and we had a great first meeting.

Jeffrey came prepared with a sketch of how he envisioned the top navigation and main page layout. I came back with ideas for colors and then, after the initial meeting was over, maybe an hour later, we had the whole design and structure more or less mapped out on napkins and spare paper.

The whole site is built on WordPress, with a custom designed theme, using several popular WordPress plugins, including WP-Ecommerce. I also made a simple video, animating the NoviJovi fuzzy character and scrolling through a poem written by Jeffrey.

Empesar Showroom is a fashion showplace in the Fashion District of New York City. I was referred to them by one of our mutual clients, Madison Harding. They approached me wanting a simple website that not only allowed them to show people who they were currently showing, but also show any press they may have acquired for their designers.

I set up a custom CMS, so they could add and edit their designers as well as show their location in the physical space of the showroom. To make the listing of current designers on display a little more interesting, we created the Designer Index, basically a souped up version of their floor plan, and via CSS, styled it to be used as the current designers list.

For a few months in 2009, BMF Media Group programmed numerous events with Carrera (Sunglasses) as a sponsor; including product launches, the Carrera Cafe at Moonshine and the Carrera Summer Escape (a rooftop VIP escape in Manhattan). Taking supplied artwork from the client, rearranging and refreshing it, I threw together several elements, notably a VIP card to the Carrera Summer Escape, a recap of the Carrera Cafe at Moonshine, evites to the product launches and an RSVP web page.

I only graphically designed the web RSVP page, I did not code it.

BMF Media Group was throwing an event with Cafe Bustelo as a sponsor. They asked me to come up with a concept for an ice-cream cart, re-branded for Cafe Bustelo. I used the sponsors website as a model, and I recreated the elements in Illustrator. I don’t think the concept was ever used. They also asked me to quickly make a banner for the event, which was used.

This was the first instance of the renamed bi-annual newsletter of The Battery Conservancy. Previously named Perennial, the new edition was named prosaically The Battery Conservancy News. The logo was designed by Stephan Doyle, or his crew. This was a six page, tri-fold layout. Shown here are three of those pages. It should be pointed out that I didn’t design this alone. Katherine Cannella, also of the Battery Conservancy, worked closely with me in refining the layout.

Client: Madison Harding

Madison Harding is one of my longest clients, and one of the most pleasant to work with. They make designer footwear, and are based in New York City.

There have been several stages of their website, which we started from scratch. The version I show here is the latest, the “white version”. As with many of my clients, I built them a custom CMS to manage their press, shops list and text content.

One of the most popular features of the site is the Play page, where users can dress a “paper” doll in different Madison Harding shoes and various clothing items. This sort of thing really makes the site fun and brings people back often. I do not envy the ladies of Madison Harding though, since they had to personally model the shoes and clothing, cut them out in Photoshop and match them to the original model. Long hours.

We never created their own e-commerce solution, but instead they opted for a simple Paypal button system instead. It seems to work great for them.

BMF Media Group throws great events, and this year they tackled the 13th Winter X-Games by turning a house into a VIP escape, sponsored by Fuze.

I designed the one-sheet for the event, the logo for The Fuze Haven and the Cafe and Spa, the invitations, the Web RSVP page, the Step and Repeat, Credentials, Signage, etc.

I was particularly happy with the explosive nature of the pink and blue background elements and the geometrically wiggly nature of the step and repeat.

For this event, I created the standard elements (bar menu, invitation, signage, rsvp webpage). For the RSVP page I only did the graphic design, not the web design, and I left the inputs from the file I supplied. You can also see an example of the event signage. In addition to this title sign, there were also several signs made for sponsors and their logos. All the signage was in this motif, shades of gray with the lighter.

I have been working with Charlotte Ronson for a while now, and this was a slight refresh to the look of the site and an update in general. Visually, we replaced (almost) all of the pink with gray and replaced the old logo with the new “CR” logo. I also took the opportunity to pull the logos out of the Flash videos and stick them into the XHTML. Additionally, I reorganized the folder structure of the entire site, allowing for cleaner URLs, and better separation of content. We also introduced the Runway Video page.

SeaGlass is a state-of-the-art carousel being developed by The Batter Conservancy for Battery Park in Lower Manhattan. Over the course of my time working with The Battery Conservancy, I have made many elements promoting and explaining SeaGlass.

On display here is a screenshot of the SeaGlass website and two sides of a postcard brochure we sent to potential supporters. The brochure was designed so that the outside could be hung on the wall, perhaps in a child’s room.

When I was asked to create a new website for Delarosa Style, I was really excited. I had worked with the owner on another job and knew she had an interesting eye. She gave me the colors she wanted to use and after a draft and a few minor revisions, we had the visual design.

I built a custom CMS for the gallery and text content. She wanted animation in the header, and even though I was hesitant, I ended up creating, what I feel, is a really cool rollover effect, utilizing a 2D-for-3D blur and parallax effect. If Flash is not installed, or Javascript is disabled, the main navigation is still visible.

I also added a WordPress blog and made a trimmed down WordPress theme.

Client: The Battery Conservancy

Warrie Price, the President and Founder of the Battery Conservancy, has a special connection to the Lucca area of Italy, so she came up with a fund-raising trip to Lucca for the Battery Council, a group of the most generous supporters of the Battery Conservancy.

I designed a four-page invitation, bound with ribbon, a brochure to get people excited about the trip, an itinerary map for the trip itself and several programs.

The brochure design shown here was never used, though I find it more lively than the one they ended up using. The maps are based on either scans of maps brought here from Tuscany or online maps. For the itinerary map, I did color correction, composition of insets and extensive cleaning to remove landmarks from the itinerary maps before adding our own points of interest.

The title font and the use of semi-transparent boxes was a predefined style of the Battery Council.

This is an update to the Agua Trip Website that related to the release of Agua Trip’s album Genetics. For the release, Agua Trip threw a release concert which included an online auction, where users could buy an original work of art from Genetics: A Visual Songbook. We also did a redesign of the homepage, featuring modules for the most important aspects of Agua Trip’s online presence.

BMF Media Group was hired to program an event in celebration of the premiere of the show Spain…on the road Again. They provided me with the show logo and the sponsor logos and let me loose. I loved the color scheme for the logo, obviously very Spanish, so I kept it, or a relative of it.

In addition to invitations, menus and the usual event fare, I also designed description plates for a photo gallery they had set up displaying images from each of the regions they visited while in Spain.

The step and repeat was a particular favorite of mine, since it included the massive logo in the center, surrounded by the rest of the logos. I’ve said this before, but I believe the step and repeat should alter the physical space in a real way, and not just in an annoying way. I think this one accomplished that.

Frank and Kahn are makers of designer head-wear. When designing their site, I found inspiration in their logo, which has a retro, angular, art-deco aspect. I went with a simple grey-to-white color scheme with a slight metallic shine. I used little brackets from the top navigation and footer to delineate the main content area.

The subdued colors of the site navigation allowed the colors of their products to almost explode out of the screen. I loved the colors of their products.

We built an e-commerce solution that would work in sync with the custom CMS I created for their product catalog.

This was a small event series at The Battery in Lower Manhattan, featuring local musicians. I like the logo, which I designed to both look like a root structure under the tree, or a quasi-reflection of its shape. The “microsite” displayed the schedule and a photos from the performances.

Jackson Martin is a long-time friend of mine. He is also an extraordinarily driven and imaginative artist. When he came to me to design his website, I was honored and thrilled.

As with almost all of my web projects, my goal was to create a page navigation that receded into the background as the content came out at the user. The color scheme was based on Jackson’s trend to dress in blue and brown, almost all of the time.

In addition to a custom CMS I developed for the rest of the site’s content, I used WordPress to drive his news page, using a very stripped down theme template, removing comments and other blog features (search, tags, etc).

Jackson is learning HTML and now maintains the site.

BMF approached me to do an invitation and T-shirt design for a sweet 16 birthday party they were planning. The birthday girl had an interest in the artwork of Takeshi Murakami. Luckily, it so happened that there was a Murakami exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum.

So, a friend of mine who was visiting, Brad Reagan, and I took a field trip. After the trip to the museum, we discussed what elements we absorbed from the work, and what we wanted to try and use in our design. Brad drew out the design on paper. I then looked at the logo and drew it and colored it in Illustrator (no tracing either).

The invitation was printed on thick card stock at 5″ x 5″. There was also information printed on the back. The logo was printed on T-shirts for the attendees.

I know it’s no Murakami, but I like to think that we integrated at least something of his spirit into our own conception.

During my time working with Stereo, I made a large supply of invites, both for digital distribution (evites) or for print. Some were in a series and had similar looks, others were based on motifs of event series that were coming through, and some were just off the wall.

Designing evites for trend-driven events are difficult, especially if you aren’t the biggest fan of the design trends going around. I tried to avoid the explosions, symmetrical mirroring and ultra-urban grunge effects that I saw in so many of the other promotional materials. I usually tried to focus on one good image, usually with the colors toned down, clear supporting text, and some sort of asymmetrical element. It may not have been the most trendy design concept, but I do feel it stood out as distinct among the billions of other event evites.

These are some of my favorites. There is something quirky and interesting about all of them. Looking back, I do find it funny that so many of my favorite ones have Steve Aoki in them.

One of the tasks I had while working with Billy’s Bakery was to update the press section of their website. Instead of just making the standard rectangular shot of the cover with a scan of each page, I wanted to make something unique for each item, driven in large part by the innate design of the original press item itself. Well, needless to say, I had lots of fun coming up with the ways of displaying them. I have included a few of my favorites here. There were high resolution PDFs available to download as well.

Music City Mystique is a nonprofit organization which brings music (specifically percussion) education and training to youth in the Middle Tennessee area. They are world champions, literally.

This was a site redesign, starting basically from scratch. I used a slimmed-down version of WordPress to drive their news items. We built forums and mailing lists and created areas for video, downloads of music exercises, audition forms and galleries.

We used their color scheme of teal, white and black. I really enjoyed creating the header banner, using the drummers and the stadium seating to give a feeling of power and impact. That year the performers were wearing blood-orange costumes, which really stand out from the teal.

The MCM Productions Page is a subsite for one of their fundraising arms.

Since the party was going to occupy separate rooms of the venue and feature distinct interior designs, the client and I wanted the invitation to show a classic duality. The invitation was printed on foam core with foil stamping. There was a long hallway leading to the room with the Absolute 100 launch, so we decided to fill the hallway with a sign with arrow, so they wouldn’t get lost. The sign also functioned as a step and repeat. In general, I designed many elements for this event including bar menus, posters, additional signage, wraps for pillars in the space that replicated bottle labels, and more.

Union Street Sound is a studio in Brandon, Vermont run by my father, Mike Boise. This was a fun project because I got to use fun textures, taken from photos of his audio equipment. Charlotte Ronson was referred to me by Madison Harding. They needed someone to maintain their site and manage the seasonal updates which corresponded to their new campaigns and collections. The first thing I did when I got my hands on their files was to update the HTML into valid XHTML and CSS. I also created two new features, the Press page and the Diary page, which are both driven by a custom-made MYSQL/PHP CMS and an actionscript-based Flash user-interface.

Billy’s Bakery approached me to do their web maintenance, updating the original design made by Big in Japan. The site was table-based HTML and the code was deprecated. Unfortunately I couldn’t convince the owners to let me update their site to valid XHTML.

Whenever I created a new element, however, I would always try to update it. I created several pages from scratch, namely the menu pages, menu items and FAQ. The menu items were a pleasure, since I got to take many of the photos (and taste the delicacies).

I also created their press items, featured on their press page.

To make the logo, I took the Stereoboombox and typography, drew in an umbrella, sand, a sky and an old-Hamptons-ish “by the shore”. I then created a standard step and repeat template, with the logos flanking the sides, to use for all the different events, replacing sponsor logos as needed. I made numerous invitations throughout the summer, and this is one of my favorites.

My Role(s): Designer, Developer

The Stereo website was already designed when I came on board. It was a Flash, timeline-based website.

The first thing I did was to clean up the FLAs (Flash project files), comment the scripts, etc.

The next thing I did was visually refine the look, paying attention to little details like borders lining up, colors matching, margins, padding, white space, thumbnail clarity, etc.

I also added a banner image which rotated through imagery from the venue and a loader which used the Stereo logo tuning into a station.
